“Name that Asteroid!” Student Contest

Deadline: 2 December, 2012
Open to: Students under age 18 from anywhere in the world
Prize: The Grand Prize winner will have named a part of the solar system! They will also receive other benefits and will be invited to participate in a public video or phone conference with OSIRIS-REx mission team members and the discoverer of the asteroid.

International Contest: Name that Asteroid!

Students worldwide have an opportunity to name an asteroid from which an upcoming NASA mission will return the first samples to Earth. Scheduled to launch in 2016, the mission is called the Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx). Samples returned from the primitive surface of the near-Earth asteroid currently called (101955) 1999 RQ36 could hold clues to the origin of the solar system and organic molecules that may have seeded life on Earth. NASA also is planning a crewed mission to an asteroid by 2025. A closer scientific study of asteroids will provide context and help inform this mission.

The asteroid received its designation of (101955) 1999 RQ36 from the Minor Planet Center, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The center assigns an initial alphanumeric designation to any newly discovered asteroid once certain criteria are met to determine its orbit.

“Asteroids are just cool and 1999 RQ36 deserves a cool name!” says Bill Nye, chief executive officer for The Planetary Society. “Engaging kids around the world in a naming contest will get them tuned in to asteroids and asteroid science.”

Eligibility

The competition is open to students under age 18 from anywhere in the world. Each contestant can submit one name, up to 16 characters long. Entries must include a short explanation and rationale for the name. Submissions must be made by an adult on behalf of the student. The contest deadline is Sunday, Dec. 2.

Children of employees of The Planetary Society, of MIT Lincoln Laboratory, of the University of Arizona, or of OSIRIS-REx team members, are ineligible to enter.

Entry Content

Eligible entries consist of the following information:

  • Proposed name - limited to 16 characters and meeting the naming guidelines
  • Justification paragraph - limited to 900 characters, including spaces
  • First name of child submitter - first name only, please.
  • Name of adult submitter - must be an individual over 18
  • Email address of adult submitter - this address will only be used to confirm the entry and communicate the results of the contest unless the submitter opts to receive other communications
  • Relationship of adult submitter to child contest entrant (parent/guardian or teacher/mentor) - used to determine whether additional parental consent is necessary for child participation
  • Age of contest entrant as of December 2, 2012
  • Optionally, entrants are asked to specify their country of residence in order for the Planetary Society to gauge international participation in the contest.
  • Optionally, U.S. entrants are asked to specify the zip code of their residence or school in order to gauge domestic participation in the contest.

Asteroids can’t be named just anything, of course.  The International Astronomical Union governs the naming of big and small objects in the solar system, and they have guidelines on how to name near-Earth objects like 1999 RQ36.

Prizes

The Grand Prize winner will have named a part of the solar system! They will also be invited to participate in a public video or phone conference with OSIRIS-REx mission team members and the discoverer of the asteroid.

Both Grand Prize winner and runners-up will see their names, photos, and submitted justification paragraphs posted on the OSIRIS-REx and Planetary Society websites. They will receive a prize package of materials to hand out at their school that may include OSIRIS-REx mission patches, stickers, and posters; copies of Planetary Report Kids; a model of the asteroid; or other fun mission- and space-related items. (Prize package contents are subject to change.) They will receive one year of membership in The Planetary Society. And they will be invited to participate in a Google+ Hangout On Air with Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Application Process

The contest is open to kids under the age of 18.  To enter, parents or teachers must fill out an online entry form with the proposed name and a short explanation of why that name is a good choice. For any questions and concerns which you might have, please use the contacts.

For more information please visit the official website.

The Viewbook Photostory 2012 Competition

Deadline: 31 October 2012
Open to: All photographers worldwide
Prize: a personalized award in the form of a book publication, a traveling exhibition kit, and exposure on a variety of channels

Description

The Viewbook Photostory is an international competition that focuses on the narrative aspects of the photographic art form. In 2009 and 2010, Photostory focused on the big picture. This year’s edition will concentrate on the theme “Small Stories.” That doesn’t mean looking for thin, simplistic, or insignificant stories. The focus will be on photographic series with a personal view, or stories from a “small” or intimate perspective.
Of course, this theme is open to interpretation.  Topics that deal with major world issues or news are not excluded, but sometimes personal stories can tell us more about the big picture because they deal with situations that individuals can relate to. The interest is focused on what is happening to specific individuals under any given conditions. The theme is “Small Stories,” and it would be fantastic if you could show us work that is focused on the micro instead of the macro. Think small.

Eligibility

The contest is open worldwide. All photographers are eligible. The submitted series will be displayed in both website form and in an iPad app with beautiful slideshow presentations. The slideshows can be accompanied by captions to provide any pertinent information. Visitors will be able to give feedback as well as share series within their own network.

Prize

The winner will receive a personalized award in the form of a book publication, a travelling exhibition kit, and exposure on a variety of channels.
The winner’s series will be crafted into a book by a renowned photography book designer, and will be printed on a specialised press. The publication will provide a different perspective and a new way to interact with the work. This will give it a new quality that can only be experienced while handling a physical object.
The shippable exhibition serves both as both a book presentation kit, and as a presentation directly related to and derived from the photographic work. It can be flexible, and should take advantage of any media possible in such an installation. It could contain projection, audio, or other materials that support the series or add to the story. There are no fixed plans yet where the kit will travel, but the aim is to debut the exhibition within the network of the photographer. That means that it could be anywhere from a café in a small village, to a fair in a large metropolitan area.

Application

The Photostory site will showcase all submissions meeting the criteria. The submission process will be handled through the online Viewbook application. The submission guidelines can be downloaded here.

Description

Youth employment is now a priority in most regions of the world. There is growing focus and investment on youth employment programs, but at the moment there is limited evidence on what works, which leads to low impact and wasted resources. According to the World Bank, as much as 40% of youth employment projects have no impact on labour xafs outcomes for youth.

With this in mind, the Youth Employment Network (YEN) and Making Cents International have partnered up to create the “What’s Working?” competition to find out what strategies and approaches are working and share them among the youth employment community.

The What’s Working? competition highlights success stories. Organizations who have had positive results from their youth employment projects can submit a Smart Note about their project, including why they think it worked and what lessons they learned. The winners are selected through online voting, comments, and a judges panel. The winning projects will have their Smart Note published on the website and receive a monetary award of up to USD 800.

For the Fall 2012 round of competition, the overarching theme is Spotlight on Technology. What is a Smart Note?

A Smart Note is a short publication summarizing a successful project or approach and explaining why it was so successful. The winners of the What’s Working competition will be asked to produce a Smart Note based on their entry to be published by YEN and our partners.

How Does the Competition Work?

  1. Entries are submitted under a chosen theme for the competition
  2. YEN screens the entries to ensure that only qualifying entries are posted on the xxxplace
  3. xxxplace members can discuss the projects and vote on their favourites
  4. The judges panel scores the entries and makes their final decision
  5. The winning applicants are informed and the final Smart Notes are submitted
  6. The winning Smart Notes are published and the awards are presented

What topics can the Smart Note cover?

The competition entry should highlight a specific approach that has had significant impact on the labour outcomes of young people. Applications must fit into one of the following categories:
